Tales from Nicobar: Why Trees Stopped Moving Leave a Comment / Uncategorized / By kaahaanighar Long, long ago when this world of ours was still young, trees could move from one place to another and send down roots in different places. In those days, men and trees regarded each other as benefactors. While travelling men seldom felt tired as the trees allowed the men to hang the goods they were carrying from their branches. The trees enjoyed carrying the loads and men drove them wherever they pleased. When men wanted to fetch their things from their garden in the jungle, all they had to do, was put the goods in a balanced manner on the branches of a tree and the tree would bring them back to the village. Also in those days, people who were unable to walk, could sit on the branches of a tree and be borne safely to their homes or wherever they wished to go. What a fantastic journey it must have been! Once a large number of people went to the jungle. On the way back to the village, they found everything to be veryheavy. So, they packed everything onto the branches of trees and drove them along. But as the trees were going along staggering and stumbling under the tremendous weight of the loads, the people who were behind, burst into fits of laughter at the comical sight of the trees falling and bumping against each other. They clapped their hands letting out catcalls. This mockery annoyed the trees immensely. They felt humiliated and decided not to move any further. Nowadays, we often have to overtax ourselves carrying our loads when we travel because the trees no longer move and help us. This is the story of why the trees do not move.
